boost your mental health

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by life piling up around you or you have a significant life event coming up soon, decluttering can be a cathartic experience. It is the process of getting rid of unwanted items in your life that no longer serve you, and it can help to clear out space for new things that do.

Here at Masons Self Storage, we’re big believers in the relief that comes with decluttering and big fans of Marie Kondo! This blog post will discuss how decluttering can boost your mental health by helping you feel calmer, more connected, and less stressed.

Decluttering can improve your mental health by helping you feel calmer

It can be challenging to maintain a calm and balanced mindset when your home is cluttered with items that remind you of the past or take up all the space you need to grow and change into who you are now. Decluttering has been shown to have a calming effect on individuals, so it’s no wonder that it can help calm you down and give your mind a break.

You know how when you’re overwhelmed, it’s hard for any of the small things in life to get through? When all those thoughts are running around in your head, decluttering will clear out some space so that new ideas can come in.

The more space you have, the easier it is to relax and destress

One of the main benefits of decluttering is that you’ll have more space in which to live. This means that your physical areas will be less cluttered and easier to navigate, making it feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. In turn, this can make you feel much more relaxed during the day, as well as before and after bed.

The less you need to think about things, the easier it will be for your mind and body to relax. Therefore, decluttering can help improve your mental health by making you feel calmer.

You’ll be able to find what you need when you need it

The more decluttered your home is, the easier it will be to find what you need when you need it. You won’t have to dig through piles of clothes or files but instead can grab things quickly and easily without getting stressed about how much time you’re wasting.

This makes the process of finding something much less stressful and pressured, which in turn can help calm down anxiety or worry about where things are, because they will always be in the same spot!

It’s better for the environment too!

When you have too many belongings, they take up space and hide other things, so we might buy the same item, again and again, not realising we already have one! When your home is more spacious and minimalistic, this can help reduce the amount of waste that your household produces.

Keeping what brings you joy will make your life better

Decluttering

Here in the UK, we love owning stuff, and we’re hesitant to part with our possessions just in case we might need it again in the future. However, Marie Kondo’s premise is that if you haven’t needed this item for a while, then you most likely won’t need it in the future. She recommends holding each item and asking yourself it if sparks joy and makes you happy. If the answer is yes, keep it, but if it’s a no, think about moving it into the rubbish or donation piles; alternatively, place it into storage to free up your space at home.

When you’re decluttering your home, it can be hard to part with certain items that have sentimental value or hold many memories. It’s natural and okay to feel some sadness when parting from these things because they represent something that means a great deal to us.

However, as time goes on, we may not even miss the things we initially thought of as precious because they no longer have any meaning or importance to us. Keeping only what brings you joy will make your life better by letting go of the past and embracing what’s in front of you.

Try decluttering in a way that feels right for you – maybe start with a drawer, closet, or even an entire room!

We’ve all been there. We wake up ready to take on the whole house, but then we tackle one room, it takes hours, and then we give up with the rest because we’ve run out of enthusiasm. Instead, you should approach your home by category. For example, attempt to sort out all the books in the house or all your clothes. Not only does this give you a better understanding of how much you own and where your items are before you start to declutter, but it also stops you from just spreading mess from one room to another and makes the overall process of decluttering easier and more achievable.

Don’t forget, there’s always self-storage

Even if we’ve all scoffed at the sentiment, a tidy house indeed reflects a tidy mind! And for many of us, it’s much easier to be calm and less stressed when everything around us is calm. To encourage you to keep everywhere organised and decluttered, Marie recommends taking photos of your home before you declutter and then as you go along so you can see how far you’ve come. This will keep your decluttering momentum going and will limit your chances of falling off the tidy wagon!

However, if you’re not quite ready to go full Marie Kondo and let go of everything straight away, have no fear!
