Masons Self Storage are delighted that they will be renewing their sponsorship with Barry Athletic Bowling Club for the new season. The sponsorship will allow the club to provide embroidered playing jackets to all club members for the coming season.

Commenting on the sponsorship arrangements, club chairman Richard Bowen said “the club were delighted with the financial support from the Mason family last season and their generous support of our club. The funding has allowed us to provide real tangible benefits for all our members and also allowed us to develop the club in the way that we want. The support from local businesses helps our club to grow and provide facilities that can benefit the whole community.”

James Mason at Masons Self Storage said “we are delighted to support Barry Athletic Bowling Club for a second year running as part of our supporting sport in the Vale of Glamorgan, initiative and are excited to be part of the growth and success of the Club in 2018”

It promises to be a busy season on the green in 2018 again for the famous Barry club and with the new season almost started there is cause for much optimism at the club in 2018. As well as a rigorous league season to look forward to, there will be plenty of additional fixtures and events to whet the appetite of players and members alike.

The first team squad will be looking to bounce back in to the top division this year after the narrow and somewhat unfortunate relegation last year. New recruits George Treppleton, Carl Best and Chris Williams will add some experience to the squad which will be important. The second team squad will be looking to consolidate their position after their promotion last year and will benefit from the continued leadership of captain Paul Webley.

The club is honoured to hold a ten nation test match in July when bowlers from across the world will descend on the 4Wood green at Barry to compete in a round robin tournament which will serve as a pre-cursor to the Atlantic games in 2019. Visiting countries will include bowls heavyweights from South Africa, Australia and Malaysia as well as some of the home nations in what should be an exciting competition for players and spectators alike. This will be followed in August with an under 18 match up between Scotland and Wales where young bowlers from both countries will be showing off their skills and looking to catch the selectors eyes to stake a claim for a place in their respective senior teams.

And the club are also delighted to reinstate the fixture against neighbours from the football section where a dozen of the managers and coaches from the Barry Athletic F.C. will take on a club select team during the season, that will be handicapped for the match up. This fixture has been successful in the past in encouraging new members to the sport and it is hoped that, by resurrecting the fixture, the club will see a number of converts joining the bowling fraternity in the coming years.

Under the watchful eye of our Greens Manager David Snelling, and supported by Avonmore, the green looks in fine condition ahead of the opening in April. Barry Athletic Bowling Club aspire to provide members and guests with one of the best, most consistent playing surfaces in Wales and are well placed to meet that aspiration in 2018. The green side facilities have been improved too with the planting of the Barrybados palm tree garden and the refurbishment of the cricket pavilion ensuring that players and spectators can enjoy the game in a fitting and complementary environment.

The season starts on the 14th April with the traditional opening event at the green. This is open to club members and the local community when there will be an opportunity to try bowls perhaps for the first time – coaching and support is always available for new players. There is always a warm welcome for former members too as the clubs looks to start the season with a number of friendly fixtures to prepare the squads for the competition ahead.
