Summer is sizzling at Barry Athletic Bowls Club

Summer has arrived at the Barry Athletic Bowls Club! The sun is high in the sky and the Bowls season is off to a flying start! Since we started sponsoring the two Bowls teams at Barry Athletic Bowls Club back in April, we love keeping up to date with the busy club encouraging players of all ages!

Very exciting news for younger players looking to try their hand at a new sport, later this month Aero Bowls will be holding a Youth Academy Day for young players between the ages of 10-16! This exciting Youth Academy Day will provide a full day of expert coaching and guidance from some of the UK’s top bowlers. Watch this space for more information.

Last weekend, some of the best bowlers from across Wales came together for The Open Triples Competition which attracted over 100 bowlers all chasing the £450 prize money! However, last year’s winners took the green by storm and lifted the trophy for a second year running. In addition to a great day out for all of the competitors, the tournament also raised money for the great work done by Diabetes UK in memory of a beloved club member, Milton Eskins, who sadly passed away last year.

This week has also attracted teams from the wider UK when the club entertained County President, John Jones, who hosted a visiting team from Wiltshire. The stunning sunshine created near perfect conditions which meant a great day’s bowling from both teams who fully took advantage of the beautifully maintained green!

On the more competitive side of the club side, both teams are doing well and preparing for a competitive season ahead. The first team are through to the final 32 of the Carruthers Shield which is the Premier Club Championship event for bowling clubs in Wales! This Saturday will be a real challenge where they will face a tricky away trip at Rhymney Gwent. The second team are sat at the top of their league and are looking great for promotion back to the first division of the Private Greens league! In addition, the midweek development side are also sat on top of their league, so the club looks like it’ll be lifting several trophies this year!

Many of the club members are also competing this week at the South Vale Bowling Finals, looking for county titles and also representation in the National Finals which will be held in Llandrindod Wells in August.

Finally, some really exciting news for the club! Barry Athletic has been chosen as one of the greens that will host the Atlantic Rim Games in 2019 and will host the finest players in the world as a number of countries attempt to qualify for the World Championships finals in 2020! This truly is a testament to the Green Manager and also the team of volunteers who produce a world class bowling green year after year at Barry Athletic.

Here at Masons Self Storage, we’re thrilled to be supporting the Barry Athletic Bowls Club and their goal to keep growing the club and sharing this competitive sport with the next generation! Read more about our sponsorship and support of Barry Athletic here.
