Barry Athletic off to a flying start

As seen on page 28 of The Gem, 11 May 2017, Barry Athletic took receipt of their sponsored club jackets from Mason’s Self Storage ahead of their warm up preparations for their Carruther’s Shield fixtures. Gordon Mason (Director) along with James and our manager John Walsh presented team captain Glyn Thomas and Michael Vaughan with their team jackets ahead of the warm up match with local rivals Cardiff.

Ahead of the game, Club Chairman Richard Bowen thanked Mason’s for their generous support commenting that it was so encouraging for the club to work with local businesses such as Mason’s Self Storage that are willing to demonstrate their support for the development of local sport.

Later on the weekend and despite a late change to the scheduled fixtures that saw the cancellation of the second team fixture, Barry Athletic got their Carruthers shield campaign off to the perfect start with a 50 shot victory over visiting Pontycymmer on Saturday 6 May.

Barry, playing at their newly named 4Wood green, got off to a flying start to lead by around 20 shots after just 6 ends across the board. This was mainly down to the rink skipped by Glyn Thomas who found themselves 13-1 up early on with the returning Richard Cowling in fine form.

The visitors with many new bowlers in their ranks were never in the game if truth be told and Barry run out convincing winners with all four rinks winning.

Top rink honours for the Stags went to the four of Gary Jones, Mike Vaughan, David Wright and Richard Bowen who were never threatened as they dominated proceedings throughout, building up a considerable lead from the start and running out winners by 23 shots.

All in all, a good start for the home side in their 2017 Carruthers campaign but much tougher tests await them, starting with an away trip to Caerau a Welfare this coming Saturday.

Barry also start their Barry Bowl campaign on Sunday with a tough trip away to Whitchurch. The second team are also in action this weekend at home to St Fagans where they will look to bounce back from their disappointing defeat at Cardiff.

Masons Self Storage are delighted to be sponsoring Barry Athletic Bowls Club and supporting them in their endeavour to keep growing the club and taking it to the next level, and the next generation!
