We know how much you all love to peek behind the curtain here at Masons Self Storage, which is why we thought we’d give you an insight into the typical day of our Centre Manager, John!

John joined us back in April 2015, the last five years have flown by here at Masons Self Storage! We’re going to let him tell you what it’s like to work here and what his typical day looks like, so read on to find out more about John!

Self Storage manager Meet our team: John, our Centre Manager

Before I joined Masons Self Storage, I worked in palletised storage & distribution for Blue Chip Businesses. It was something I thoroughly enjoyed over the years and presented numerous opportunities to me from a business perspective.

However, in 2015, I was asked by Gordon to join the company and develop the self-storage side of the Masons Group at a time when the self-storage side of the business was being renovated. Masons Self Storage had been open since 1995 but following a huge million-pound investment project to renovate the storage facility, modernising the space and increasing the storage room rentals; I was looking forward to the challenge of moving the business forward.

We are a small team here at Masons Self Storage, there’s just two of us who operate the day to day self-storage business, my colleague James, Masons’ Marketing Manager, and I, but we have the support of the wider Masons Group behind us. Our days will vary every day of the week ranging from helping customers with their deliveries, showing new customers their potential new self-storage units to selling packaging materials, plus much more!

Every day is different, but every day starts with a thorough wipe down of the facility to ensure clients and staff are safe on site. Generally, my days consist of helping customers with their deliveries in the morning, helping potential new customers, signing up new customers and keeping a close eye on credit control. We also want to make sure that the site is presentable and professional along with generally chatting to our clients to build a special customer service and relationship with them.

There’s so much to enjoy in our line of work and working within the self-storage industry! If I really had to choose one favourite part of my role, it would be that I get to meet new people on a daily basis and get to know our customers. This helps building a long-lasting business relationship with someone they can trust to look after their items.

Outside of work, I enjoy watching all sports and participating in cycling, tennis & socialising. I’m a Dinas Powys RFC supporter through-and-through and watch their local games on a weekly basis! I love spending time with my family and my dog Jesse, a (very!) energetic springer spaniel, who keeps me extremely busy!

If I wasn’t at Masons Self Storage, my dream job would have to be an astronaut, after all, I am a 60s kid at the end of the day! Although I think I already have the best job in the world: being a super dad to my two kids!

To anyone thinking of becoming a Self-Storage Centre Manager, you need to be able to wear many hats from customer service to admin to leadership to accounting, I’d say it’s important to be a well-rounded person for sure! But if you manage to get yourself a good team around you, like we do here at Masons Self Storage, then you’re onto a winner! To be able to work as a team will not only help you develop others but help you as well.

With 24/7 accessibility and storage units starting from just £5 a week, why not see how our team can help you clear some space? Here at Masons Self Storage, you can be sure that we are strictly following the government’s guidelines for social distancing, as well as increased cleaning of communal areas.
