The university year is coming to an end and sorting out where to store your belongings over the holidays can be a nightmare. Luckily, here at Masons Self Storage we’ve got the perfect solution! Plus, with our Mobile Self Storage, we’ll come right to your doorstep to collect your items and return them to you when you’re back at university in September – even to a different address!

Whether you need somewhere to keep your belongings safe for a few nights, or for the whole summer, self-storage is the perfect way to ensure that your belongings will be safe.

Here’s our top tips to make sorting out your belongings for self-storage as simple as possible!

  1. Get organised!
Check with your accommodation team or your landlord about specific information such as move out dates and times, do’s and don’ts, the checkout process etc. Reading all the information thoroughly will mean you’re completely prepared and can start planning!
  1. Does it bring you joy?
We’ve spoken a lot about Marie Kondo’s The Joy of Tidying Up and the different ways you should organise your belongings, you can find out more here. Essentially, have a sort through your things and organise them into what you are going to pack, throw away, sell/give away and donate to charity. This will help you declutter and make sure you only put into storage things that you need! If you’re thinking about having a sale on eBay, take a look at our 10 top tips for selling on eBay here!If you haven’t worn it, used it, or even looked at it in the last six months – it needs to go!
  1. Plan for the season
Although the British weather is a tad unreliable, you probably won’t need that winter coat or heavy jacket over the summer, so be sure to store it safely for when winter comes next year.
  2. Organise your boxes
Try and keep them as organised as you can, room-by-room. Then it’s simply a matter of writing ‘bedroom’ onto the box for you to easily store and unpack next term. Finally, be sure that you have everything you need, especially if your home is far away from your university or college. Don’t forget, that you can access your storage unit at Masons Self Storage, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!
  3. Vacuum pack your clothing
Clothing can surprisingly take up a lot of room in storage, but luckily there’s an easy way to reduce the space they take up: Vacuum compression bags! They will keep your clothes compact and ensure they stay fresh and crease free. They don’t cost much and are easy to use. Simply roll up your clothes (folding will create creases) and put them inside the bags. Push all the air out of the bags (or you can use a vacuum cleaner) and seal them – easy!
  4. Store your books correctly
Whether your books are for pleasure or educational purposes, care needs to be taken when storing them. It’s all too easy to damage the spines and pages of books, so it’s not enough to just pile them into one big box and hope they’ll be ok. Use smaller boxes for books, it’s tempting to put them all in one large box, howeve,r the weight will cause issues for you during transportation – plus there’s a chance the box could break and damage your books. When placing your books in the boxes, make sure they are laid flat – this may mean they take up more room, but standing them upright will damage the spines.
  1. Clean your bedding before storage
There are several ways to store your bedding, but one of the biggest mistakes people make is not choosing to clean it beforehand. Although make sure it’s dry before you pack it – you don’t want your pillows to grow mould or develop a nasty damp smell!
One way to store your bedding in storage is vacuum bags, which are excellent if you want to ensure your bedding stays free of allergens and takes up as little space as possible. Another option is plastic-lidded boxes, which are also great for keeping your bedding clean and dust-free. If you don’t have any plastic boxes, cardboard ones are a good alternative.
